As a booker in the film industry, every day is a whirlwind of excitement and challenges. No two days are the same. It’s fast-paced and often unpredictable! Starting early with a coffee in hand, the booker enters her inbox and gets the engine running for the day, ready to juggle the projects ahead.
The most exciting part of the job is all the new briefs that come in. It’s interesting to see in writing what’ll soon become an image on your screen. We get those briefs set up as soon as we see them and then get submission emails out to all our lovely talent to start marking their availabilities.
PRO TIP ONE: For commercials especially (and any jobs in general), mark your availability as soon as you can. Casting often have super tight deadlines to get submissions through to them (sometimes just a few hours) and you don’t want to miss out on the chance to be seen by casting!
As the deadlines approach, we collate all available talent and send your headshot off to casting. Then comes the waiting game. Who will get auditions? Who will be confirmed for the part in the latest series?
As soon as those audition emails hit, it’s back to moving at 100km p/h. Auditions are another time-sensitive matter. We have to have those set up, emailed out, and confirmations back to casting asap to secure your spot. That’s why your phone will start blowing up. Promise, it’s in your best interest!
PRO TIP TWO: If you are one of the lucky talent who land an audition, make sure to get back to your booker as soon as possible, so we can get that audition secured and then you can prepare! It’s not every day people get that opportunity, so give it your all!
Between the new briefs and filming, there are of course all the other tasks that come into play. Liaising with clients, sending through extra information about our fabulous talent, sorting any replacements, reviewing contracts, sending through calltimes and much, much more. Each day is unique and this industry never fails to keep me on my toes, that’s what makes it so intriguing.
PRO TIP THREE: Confirm, confirm, confirm!
As mentioned, this industry is fast-paced, so you need to be too.
Whether it’s an audition, callback, role booking or calltimes, it’s super important to confirm as soon as humanly possible. Casting need to know that talent are good to go.
If calltimes still aren’t confirmed late into the evening, they may get cold feet, think you won’t show up and choose to replace. We don’t want anyone losing their bookings, so if you’re booked for the next day, be prepared and on standby to get those calltimes confirmed!
Ultimately, booking talent for roles is the most rewarding part of the job. Whether it’s for an extra part in a local series or a lead role in the latest feature film or commercial, it makes me so happy to give talent the good news that they’re heading for set! After all, that’s what we're all here for!
And that’s a wrap!
